El curso, que se desarrollará en el propio conservatorio,  constará de clases individuales y en conjunto para estudiantes de arpa de los grados profesional y superior.

Marianne ten Voorde recibió su formación en su país natal, Holanda, donde estudió con renombrados profesores como Edward Witsenburg y Erika Waardenburg. Como profesora ofrece una enseñanza arpística según la escuela holandesa, basada en una técnica segura y relajada para conseguir un sonido más grande e intenso evitando los riesgos de sobrecarga muscular, tendinitis y problemas posturales. Durante años ha ayudado a numerosos arpistas a mejorar su técnica con el fin de expresar sus ideas musicales con más soltura y para estar mejor preparados frente a los nervios que pueden generar las audiciones y los exámenes.

El curso en sí no tiene ningún coste, gastos para comidos y alojamiento corren a cargo de cada estudiante. This past 18th of April marked the release of “Ancient Vibrations”, the new album from musician and researcher Michael Levy.
Michael Levy is a peculiar and original artist whose aim, ever since 2006, has been the study and re-enactment of the repertoire and the interpretative technics of the ancient world lyres. He bases his work on the study of any representation that may exist (sculptures, paintings, etc.), as well as in the very few musical examples that may have made it to our days from the ancient times of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. At the same time, the study of the interpretative technics of ancient harps, which have been preserved in Africa, has become an interesting point of departure to understand the behavior of these instruments from long past ancient times. This job has immersed him in a feverish task that, as a result, has culminated with the publication of no less than 14 albums of  ancient lyres music in the span of just three years.

“Ancient Vibrations” is the last one of said albums. An album in which Levy shows us a repertoire of his own compositions, created specifically for the replicas of the ancient harps and lyres he plays. For this purpose, he uses some of the musical modes of the ancient Middle East, experimenting with them and, trying to find new sounds and sensations. This album includes original tunes created to be played on the archaic African arched harp, the David’s harp, and the biblical lyre. It also includes an interesting duet along harpist Rebecca Penkett.

Michael Levy es un artista curioso y original cuya meta desde 2006 es el estudio y recreación del repertorio y técnica interpretativa de las liras del mundo antiguo, basando su trabajo en el estudio de cuanta representación exista de estas (esculturas, pinturas, etc) como de los escasisimos ejemplos musicales que nos han llegado desde la más remota antigüedad de Mesopotamia, Egipto, Grecia y Roma. Asimismo, el estudio de las técnicas interpretativas de algunos ejemplos de arpas primitivas que aun se conservan en Africa ha supuesto también un interesante punto de partida para comprender el funcionamiento de estos instrumentos de los más lejanos tiempos históricos. Esta labor le ha llevado a una actividad febril que ha tenido como resultado la publicación de hasta 14 albumes de música de liras antiguas en apenas 3 años.

“Ancient Vibrations” es el último de estos albumes, donde Levy nos presenta un repertorio de composición propia para las replicas de arpas y liras antiguas con las que toca, utilizando para ello algunos de los modos musicales propios de la musica del antiguo medio oriente sobre los que experimenta en busca de sonoridades y sensaciones nuevas.  El album incluye composiciones originales para Arpa africanar arcaica, Arpa de David, Lira bíblica y tambien un interesante dueto con la arpista Rebecca Penkett.

La Asociación Il Teatro della Memoria organiza en Roma del 1 al 8 de agosto de 2012 la XI edición de L’Humor Bizarro, una serie de cursos, conciertos y talleres centrados en la música y la danza antiguas.

Lo Sacro y Lo Profano son los dos polos entre los cuales se moverá L’Humor Bizzarro 2012. Una edición llena de ideas que pasan por varios siglos y que contribuirán al espectáculo final, este año también fruto de la interacción entre los cursos de canto, danza, instrumento y teatro, acorde con una práctica que ve juntos los alumnos, los docentes y los artistas invitados, presentar al público el trabajo de una intensa semana de estudio.

Young Scottish harpist Rachel Hair has just launched her 3rd album, “No More Wings”…

1) First of all, congratulations on this new recording.Tell us, how was the creative process and the recording of “No more Wings”? What do you want to share with us about this new CD?

This is the first cd I’ve done with my current line-up and it is the first cd that has truly been a trio effort. My first album “Hubcaps and Potholes” was a solo cd, and my second album “The Lucky Smile” had a mixture of group and solo tracks on it.

We had a mixture of tracks that we have been playing concerts for several years now and were exicted to finally be able to record them and then other tracks we arranged specifically for the album recording in a week of rehearsals that was done before we went into the studio.
Jenn and I tend to sit and work out basic chord accompaments and arrangements for the tunes and then later Euan comes in and we develop the tunes further with his input.

2) How was your life from the moment you decided to study harp? How did you start and who were your teachers?

I was born and brought up in the village of Ullapool, in the Highlands of Scotland. There was lots of traditional Scottish and Celtic music in the area so I was surrounded by it from a young age. I begun harp aged 10 after attending a summer school in traditional music called “Feis Rois”, where the teacher was Corrina Hewat. I really enjoyed myself so my parents hired me a harp and I started weekly lessons with the Americian, now living in Scotland, harpist Bill Taylor.
When I was 16 my family moved to the city of Edinburgh and I got lessons at school from Charlotte Peterson and Margaret Collins.
Throughout my school years I still attended “Feis Rois” in my holidays and had many harp teachers there and also loved playing alongside some fantastic traditional musicians there.
A big turning point for me was when I was accepted to study music at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. It was a unique course where traditional Celtic musicians studied alongside jazz, classical, rock and pop musicians. This opened my mind to many different styles of music which have each influenced my playing in their own way.
During this time I studied with the world renowned Scottish harpist Corrina Hewat. She was very influential to me as she taught me to develop my own style of playing.

3)Which is the main difference between “No more wings” and your past CDs? How can you describe the evolution of your music?

No More Wings is the first album that I have recorded with my trio, and it is very much a “trio” album, as we all play on each track. Jenn is a fantastic singer so we have been able to record some songs on it too.

We’ve been playing together for around 3 years now and are very comfortable and confident with our music and I think this shows in the cd.
It also isn’t what you’d expect from a normal harp cd. There are lots of upbeat tunes and not so many big slow airs!

4) What can you tell us about the other two musicians in your trio? How long have you been touring together? What about the other guests artists on the cd?

Jenn and I studied at University together and have played with each other on a casual basis for years. She “officially” started playing with me 3 years ago after my previous guitarist Paul Tracey moved onto different projects. Euan has been playing with us for around 2 years. He used to stand in for our previous bassist James Lindsay when James was busy playing with his other band Breabach. It was only natural that when James became full-time with Breabach that Euan take over and join us on a permanent basis.
Euan comes from a jazz background, so that’s been fun to experiment with on the new album.

On the album we also have our produced Angus Lyon who plays accordion and Rhodes on a couple of tracks. I’ve known Angus for years so it was great that he was able to play on a few tracks. Fraser Fifield is a well-known Scottish musician famed for his cross-over between Scottish and jazz music. We were very excited to have him play soprano Saxophone on some of the tracks.
Signy Jackobsdottir is a Scottish percussionist who is originally from Iceland. She is incredibly creative with her percussion and helped make some of tracks even more interesting.

5) In the track list we can see  there’s a combination of tunes from very different backgrounds, some of them are traditional from different countries, an another  few were composed by you and also by Jenn or other composers… How did you make the selection?
In the trio it tends to be me who chooses the tunes(melodies) we play and Jenn chooses the songs we play.
For some of them, I wrote them specifically for the album, and I had a certain style in mind that I wanted to write them in. Others are tunes that we really like to play, and we’ve then tried to find other tunes that go after them. A few tunes (the Swedish tunes and Alistair m’ annsachd) I sourced from collections of old folk tunes. I like to spend time playing through these old collections and finding old tunes that haven’t been played for a very long time, so that we can help bring them to life again.

6) How many harps do you own? Which are your favourites for recording or when and which for playing live?
I own two harps, both “Glenelle’s” made by Starfish designs, who are based in the village of Ballachulish, 2 hours north of where I live in Scotland.
One is in Walnut and one in maple. They have both been hollowed out inside to make them lighter, and easier to travel with.
I actually used both of them for the recording. The maple harp has a richer sound where as the walnut one has a brighter sound. I tend to use the walnut harp when playing live as it is 2kgs lighter that the maple one and easier to fly with .

I love playing starfish harps as they are perfect for my style of playing. Starfish are also very supportive to me as a musician and I work with them in the development of new harps and accessories, such as the flight case they have made making it a lot easier for me to fly with my harp (it only weighs 20kg in it!)

7) In “No more wings” you have recorded an interesting version of “Cancro Cru”, a tune composed by Anxo Pintos (Berrogüetto). When did you first listen to this tune, and why did you decide to include it in your repertoire?

I was taught “Cancro Cru” by Irish harpist Laoise Kelly about 7 years ago now. We were taking part in a special concert at Celtic Connections festival called “Master and Apprentice”. Laoise was my master so we worked on some new tunes together. I fell in love with the tune and recorded it on my debut solo album. When I begun playing with Jenn and Euan they also fell in love with it, so we have re-arranged it for the trio. Its one of our favourite tunes to play live so we really wanted to record it again for the new album.

8) Which harpists are your role models? Do you know any Spanish harpist?

I have many harpists that I admire… Corrina Hewat, Laoise Kelly, Catriona Mckay and many more. I have really being enjoying playing with Breton harpist Tristan le Govic over the past while. We performed a dup concert at the Dinan Harp festival in Brittany and the Lorient Interceltique festival last year. I love Breton music and really enjoy playing with Tristan as he’s such an energetic player.
I’m afraid I am sad to say I have never heard any Spanish harpists live! I do know of Xabier Gomez and his work.

9) What’s your opinion about the current situation of the celtic harp and its role in the Scottish folk music?
The harp is a popular instrument now in Scotland although there are no professional male players…. They are all female! The players in Scotland are very innovative and many, such as Catriona McKay, are pushing the boundaries of the harp, showing it in a new light and performing new music on it using many innovative techniques.

1) Antes de nada, enhorabuena por este nuevo disco. Dinos, ¿cómo ha sido el proceso creativo de “No more Wings”?, ¿qué te gustaría compartir con nosotros acerca de este nuevo CD?

Este es el primer CD que hago con mi grupo actual, y es el primer CD que de verdad ha sido una creación del trío. Mi primer álbum, “Hubcaps and Potholes”, era un álbum en solitario, y mi segundo álbum, “The Lucky Smile”, fue una mezcla de canciones de grupo y solos. Teníamos una mezcla de canciones que llevábamos tocando en conciertos desde hacía años, y estábamos entusiasmados por poder grabar por fin esas y las demás canciones que preparamos específicamente para la grabación durante una semana de ensayos que tuvimos antes de meternos en el estudio. Jenn y yo solemos sentarnos y trabajar los acordes y acompañamientos de base para los temas. Depués, Euan se nos une y con sus apreciaciones desarrollamos un poco más el sonido.

2) ¿Cómo ha sido tu vida desde que decidiste estudiar arpa?, ¿cómo empezaste y quienes fueron tus profesores?

Nací y crecí en el pueblo de Ullapool, en las Highlands de Escocia. Había un montón de música tradicional escocesa y celta en la zona, así que estuve rodeada por ella desde que era pequeña. Comencé con el arpa cuando tenía 10 años, tras ir a una escuela de verano de música tradicional llamada “Feis Rois”, con la profesora Corrina Hewat. Disfruté un montón, así que mis padres me alquilaron un arpa y comencé a dar lecciones semanales con el arpista americano, ahora afincado en Escocia, Bill Taylor. Cuando tenía 16 años mi familia se trasladó a la ciudad de Edimburgo, y recibí clases en la escuela de Charlotte Peterson y Margaret Collins. Durante mis años escolares seguí acudiendo a “Feis Rois” durante las vacaciones, y allí tuve muchos profesores de arpa. Me encantaba tocar al lado de fantásticos músicos tradicionales durante mis estancias. Un gran punto de inflexión para mí se produjo cuando me aceptaron para estudiar música en la Universidad de Strachclyde, en Glasgow. Era un curso único en el que músicos tradicionales celtas estudiaban junto a músicos de jazz, de música clásica, de rock y pop. Esto abrió mi mente hacia diferentes estilos de música que, cada uno a su manera, han influido en mi forma de tocar. Durante ese tiempo estudié con Corrina Hewat, arpista escocesa de renombre mundial. Me influyó muchísimo, ya que me enseñó a desarrollar mi propio estilo a la hora de tocar.

3) ¿Cuál es la principal diferencia entre “No more Wings” y tus anteriores CD?, ¿Cómo describirías la evolución de tu música?

“No more Wings” es el primer álbum que he grabado con mi trío, y es, sin lugar a dudas, el álbum de un “trío”, puesto que todos tocamos en todas las canciones. Jenn es una cantante magnífica, así que también hemos podido grabar algunas canciones con voz. Llevamos tocando juntos al rededor de 3 años y nos sentimos muy cómodos y seguros con nuestra música. Creo que es algo que se aprecia en el CD. También es cierto que no es lo que uno se esperaría del típico CD de arpa. Hay un montón de canciones animadas, ¡y no hay demasiados slow-airs!

4) ¿Qué puedes contarnos sobre los otros dos músicos de tu trio?, ¿cuánto hace que salís de tour juntos?, y, ¿qué hay de los otros invitados del CD?

Jenn y yo estudiamos juntas en la universidad, y hemos tocado juntas de manera casual durante años. Comenzó a tocar “oficialmente” conmigo hace tres años, después de que mi anterior guitarrista, Paul Tracey, se pasara a otros proyectos diferentes. Euan lleva tocando con nosotras unos 2 años. Solía sustituir a nuestro anterior bajista, James Lindsay, cuando James estaba ocupado con su otro grupo, Breabach. Fue lógico que cuando James se incorporó a tiempo completo con Breabach, Euan pasara a ocupar su lugar y se uniera a nosotras de forma permanente.

5) En la lista de canciones podemos apreciar que hay una combinación de melodías de procedencias muy diversas, algunas canciones tradicionales de diferentes países y algunas compuestas por ti y también por Jenn y otros compositores… ¿cómo hicisteis la selección?

Dentro del trío, suelo ser yo la que escoge las melodías que tocamos, y Jenn la que escoge las canciones. Algunas de ellas las escribí específicamente para el álbum, y tenía un estilo concreto en mente con el que quería escribirlas. Otras son melodías que nos gusta mucho tocar, y por último tratamos de encontrar otras melodías que se ajustaran al resto. Algunas de ellas (las melodías suecas y Alistair m’ annsachd) las saqué de colecciones de melodías de folk antiguo. Me gusta dedicar tiempo a tocar canciones de estas viejas colecciones y encontrar melodías que no han sido tocadas desde hace mucho tiempo, de esa manera podemos contribuir a devolverlas de nuevo a la vida

6) ¿Cuántas arpas tienes?, ¿cuáles son tus favoritas para grabar o cuando estás tocando en directo?

Tengo dos arpas, ambas del modelo Glenelle, hechas por Starfish Designs, con sede en el pueblo de Ballachulish, a dos horas al Norte de donde vivo en Escocia. Una es de nogal, y la otra de arce. Ambas fueron vaciadas por dentro para hacerlas más ligeras y que así fuera más fácil viajar con ellas. Lo cierto es que utilicé ambas para la grabación. El arpa de arce tiene un sonido más intenso, mientras que la de nogal tiene un sonido más vivo. Suelo usar el arpa de nogal cuando toco en directo, ya que es 2Kg más ligera que la de arce y es más fácil volar con ella. Me encanta tocar las arpas Starfish, son perfectas para mi manera de tocar. Además, en Starfish me han brindado mucho apoyo como músico, y trabajo con ellos en el desarrollo de nuevas arpas y accesorios, como el estuche para transporte aéreo que han fabricado, que hace que para mí sea mucho más fácil volar con mi arpa (¡dentro del estuche sólo pesa 20Kg!)

7) En “No more Wings” has grabado una  interesante versión de “Cancro Cru”, una melodía compuesta por Anxo Pintos (Berrogüetto). ¿Cuándo escuchaste esta canción por primera vez, y por qué decidiste incluirla en tu repertorio?

La arpista irlandesa Laoise Kelly me enseñó “Cancro Cru” hace como 7 años. Participábamos en un concierto especial llamado “Maestro y Aprendiz” en el festival Celtic Connections, y Laoise era mi maestra, así que trabajamos juntas con algunas canciones nuevas. Me enamoré de la canción y la grabé en mi álbum de debut como solista. Cuando empecé a tocar con Jenn y Euan ellos también se enamoraron de la canción, así que volvimos a hacer los arreglos para el trío. Es una de nuestras canciones favoritas para tocar en directo, así que nos apetecía mucho grabarla otra vez para el nuevo álbum.

8) ¿Quienes son tus referencias como arpista?, ¿conoces algún arpista español?

Hay muchos arpistas a los que admiro… Corrina Hewat, Laoise Kelly, Catriona Mckay y muchos más. Últimamente he disfrutado mucho tocando con el arpista bretón Tristan le Govic. Tocamos juntos en un concierto a dos en el festival de Arpa de Dinan en Bretaña, y el año pasado en el festival Intercéltico de Lorient. Me encanta la música bretona, y disfruto un montón tocando con Tristan, es un intérprete tan lleno de energía… Me temo, y me entristece decirlo, que nunca he escuchado a ningún arpista español en directo. Pero conozco a Xabier Gómez y su trabajo.

9) ¿Cuál es tu opinión acerca de la situación actual del arpa celta y su rol dentro de la música tradicional escocesa?

El arpa es, a día de hoy, un instrumento popular en Escocia, aunque no hay arpistas profesionales masculinos… ¡Todas son mujeres!. Las arpistas escocesas son muy innovadoras, y muchas, como Catriona McKay, sobrepasan los límites del arpa, mostrándola desde una nueva perspectiva e interpretando con ella música novedosa, empleando cantidad de técnicas innovadoras.

We finally got around to listening to “No More Wings”, the new album from Scottish harpist Rachel Hair. An eagerly awaited album in which we had placed high hopes ever since we listened to her last project, “The Lucky Smile”. It has fulfilled all our expectations, confirming that Rachel and her trio project are no longer a promising sensation but a solid project, a consolidated project worth of being considered inside the harp scene. “No More Wings” follows the path started with “The Lucky Smile”: Rhythm, intensity, energy and punch all packed into a sound that, fortunately, is far away from the archetypal image of the harp as a bucolic and relaxing instrument.

The selected repertory involves us in a journey through a wide range of musical cultures: songs from Scotland, Sweden, and Brittany, as well as original songs, all of them sifted through the Rachel Hair Trio trademark. Also, in the middle of it all, we find an odd treat: a surprising and delicate cover of “Cancro Cru”, a song from Anxo Pintos (member of the galician band Berrogüetto) who, in these past few years, has made himself present in the repertoire of harpists such as Rachel Hair or Jochen Vogel, and who had already been recorded in Rachel’s first project, “Hubcaps and Potholes”.

Special mention deserve the guest artists present in this CD, artists that give an extra and surprising dose of color and improvisation. On another note, the other two members of Rachel’s trio, Jenn Butterworth and Euan Burton, show themselves as two multifaceted elements that come and go as needed, giving the perfect overtone and adding a variety of elements that are more than inviting. It’s particularly important to mention the rhythmic character that both of them give to the accompaniment, as well as the interesting use of the voice that the multifaceted Jenn, who not only sings in a couple of songs but also contributes with soft chorus in many others, does.

To sum it up, this is the confirmation of a project that aimed high and has become a reality.

El repertorio escogido implica un viaje por diversas culturas musicales… temas escoceses, suecos, bretones, de composición propia…todos tamizados por el sello personal del Rachel Hair Trio,  para en medio de todo ello encontrarnos con una curiosa sorpresa: Una sorprendente y delicada version de “Cancro Cru”, un tema de Anxo Pintos, componente de la banda gallega Berrogüetto, y que en los ultimos años se ha instalado en el repertorio de arpistas como Rachel Hair o Jochen Vogel y que ya habia sido grabado en el primer trabajo de Rachel, “Hubcaps and Potholes”.

Mención aparte merecen también el resto de musicos invitados en este Cd, quienes aportan una dosis de colorido e improvisación sorprendente. Por su parte, los dos compañeros de Rachel, Jenn Butterworth y Euan Burton se presentan como dos elementos polifacéticos que salen y entran de plano dando el matiz justo y aportando elementos de variedad más que apetecibles. Especialmente importante el caracter rítmico que ambos imprimen al acompañamiento y el interesante uso de la voz que hace la polifacética Jenn, quien además de cantar un par de temas, aporta suaves colchones de voz en otros muchos.

En resumen, la confirmación de un proyecto que apuntaba alto y se ha confirmado como una realidad.
